Interiors
Independent Art Fair
New York, NY, 2026
At Independent Art Fair, Mesler debuted a previously unknown series of paintings. Joel Mesler Presented by The Estate of Joel Mesler expanded the artist's creative practice and potential for self-representation. The presentation titled Interiors returned to an early, personal figurative language, one last approached before Mesler became an art dealer, and later a consequential international artist. The project illuminated possible new models between artists and gallerists during a time of uncertainty and change.
Interiors is a series of large-scale paintings in which Mesler aims to take off the mask, setting aside the roles and armor that can accumulate around a public-facing creative life. Mesler approaches the paintings as a different person, where he once felt that the work was circled by doubt and ego, he now sees it from a distinct internal place shaped by courage, personal recovery, and a larger belief system in the power of vulnerability. Presenting the new archetype personally at the fair gives the artists an opportunity to step into a more authentic relationship with the complexity of his roles as an artist.
